The Young Railway Professionals Pitching Competition was one of the many highlights. As Danny Broad, CEO, ARA reflected, “It’s very obvious when you look at the age group around the rail industry that it’s a very male orientated and a number of members of the industry have been around for a long time – there’s a lot of grey hair!”
The audience together with our respected industry judges, Sue McCarrey, CEO, The Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator; Alan Beacham, Executive General Manager Rail & Defence, UGL and Andrew Lezala, Managing Director, Metro Trains Australia were very impressed by the analysis, insight and presentation skills of our finalists:
- Alexandra Baranksi, Graduate Engineer (Electrical), Aurizon
- Jason Bridgman, Systems Development and Support, Train Planning, Operations Planning, Operations, Sydney Trains
- James Donovan, Graduate Engineer, Metro Trains Melbourne
- Michelle Doolan, Civil & Environmental Engineer, Aurecon / MMRA
- Ben Mason, Economist, Arup
Congratulations again to the winner, Michelle Doolan from Aurecon/MMRA together with all the finalists! As Howard Collins, Chief Executive of Sydney Trains commented, “The future of the industry will be secured if we have those young professionals in rail”.
We’ll be looking at continuing and expanding this initiative in 2017 and keeping up to date with the career developments of these inspiring and aspiring individuals. View a highlights video of this session at http://ow.ly/fTqP306JIs8
The high quality of the technical sessions again provided a great insight into the research and development taking place within the industry. Technical details were well-balanced by analytical material and project updates and offered encouraging signs for the benefits and opportunities this knowledge offers industry. All of the approved conference presentations will be shared and available via the Rail Knowledge Bank.
Catching up with customers, suppliers and industry colleagues is always a highlight of this premier event. The advances in collaboration and innovation were on display throughout the trade show which to quote, Scott Reimers, Business Start Up Manager from Metro Trains Australia had, “good numbers, good enthusiasm, good feedback”
The rail industry is an especially social group and amidst all the knowledge sharing managed to maximise the networking opportunities offered by the social activities which included the Welcome Reception, the Exhibition Networking Drinks and the Gala Dinner.
